Practical info

The Sónar Innovation Challenge is divided in an online and an onsite phase. During the online phase, from May 2nd till June 12th, teams work to plan the best solution for the challenge in collaboration with company mentors, and start building a prototype. From June 13th till June 16th teams and mentors meet in Barcelona to develop and finalize the prototype and present it to the Sónar+D audience.

online phase (may 2nd - june 12th)

remote collaboration

During the online phase of the SIC, challengers and mentors collaborate and coordinate remotely in order to prepare for the final phase of the SIC, a 4-day creative sprint within Sónar festival in Barcelona. 

Although the online phase has no formal structure, we recommend that each team organizes their efforts around the following milestones:

  1. Definition of team roles and responsibilities
  2. Conceptualization of the proposed solution to the challenge
  3. Implementation of a first prototype
  4. Definition of a work plan for the 4-day creative sprint in Barcelona

Frequent communication is key to a smooth collaboration between team members, so we encourage each team to establish a weekly group call in order to monitor progress on the above milestones.

Team webpage

Each team will have their own public page in the SIC website that they can edit and update with information about the team members and their project. The team page will serve to promote the team’s work and raise interest on their approach to the challenge until the Sónar festival begins, so the more information you provide on your work, the better!

We also recommend teams to publish a weekly catch-up blog post outlining their progress – this way the rest of the world can have an insight into your team’s efforts and progress!

onsite phase (13th-16th june)

kickoff meetup (13th)

A kickoff meetup will take place on June 13th at the Music Technology Group of Universitat Pompeu Fabra (directions here). Search for “Sala Polivalent” at floor -2, Tanger Building (there will be signs to help you find the spot). During this day, teams will meet in person for the first time and will be able to work on their prototypes to get them ready for being finalized and showcased at Sónar+D. Food and drinks included!  

 

working sessions and showcase (14th-16th)

During the festival, every team will have a dedicated space at Sónar+D MarketLab, where they will be able to work on their prototype and interact with Sónar+D attendees. On June 16th from 17.45 until 19.00 the challengers will present their prototypes in Room+D.

Disclaimer: The information presented below is from SIC 2016 and serves as a reference. While we do not anticipate drastic changes, be advised that some of the below aspects may be updated.

  • Exhibition booth with space for 5 creators and 3 company mentors (4x4m) 1 work table for 8 people with measures 2mx1m.
  • 8 chairs for the work table
  • 10 electric plugs for the work table
  • 1 Computer monitor for the work table (at least 22”)
  • 1 Pair of speakers for the work table
  • 8 ethernet plugs for the work table
  • 8 RJ45 cables for wired connection
  • Wireless internet connection

General Sónar+D hours: 10am – 8pm. Please notice that the area should not be left unattended.

Travel grant

Challengers coming from outside Barcelona get a 300€ travel grant they can use for plane tickets and/or accommodation.

Food

Foods and beverages will be provided during the kickoff meetup. During Sónar (June 16th-18th), challengers and mentors will get food & drink tickets. 

Sónar passes

Every challenger and mentor gets a Sónar+D delegate pass, that grants access to the whole festival.

accreditation

An email will be sent to each participant with a link for filling in your accreditation details. Please, follow this link and fill in the details as soon as possible.

To access the Sónar+D you’ll need to pick up your physical accreditation on the first day of the event. Sónar will send you email instructions regarding where and when to pick up the accreditation. If you have any trouble please write to helpdesk@sonar.es

IMPORTANT:To pick up your accreditation you’ll need the same ID/Passport you used when filling in accreditation details via the link provided.
